Suibukan Organization Greece

In Greece, Suibukan constitutes a unique school of training and studying of the traditional Okinawan martial arts and more specifically of Shorin Ryu Karate Do, Matayoshi Kobudo and Yamashita Suikendo. Four dojos in Greece belong to the Suibukan Organization (in Athens, Thessaloniki and Patra). Moreover, the Organization has created and supports Suibukan University clubs in the N.T.U.A., the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Panteion University, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the University of Patras.

Shorin ryu karate do, Matayoshi Kobudo and Yamashita Suikendo are fighting arts, a dance, a complex form of exercise, a way of thinking, a way of living. The physical training of these arts is one of the most complex and complete forms of physical training. It requires the incorporation and refinement of body skills such as speed, acceleration, strength, stamina, flexibility and coordination while it develops the ability of concentration in high levels.
The long-lasting effort and practice reflects positively in one’s personality, it creates a stoical attitude towards life and makes the trainee sensitive towards nature and man, relieving him from stress. We believe that practice in the right way of the traditional eastern martial arts profits both the individual and the society in which he functions.

In Suibukan, our outlook regarding martial arts is not in their fighting form. Our aim is not to produce athletes that will compete for the acquisition of some metal but fighters of life that will compete in society. The over-simplification of martial arts and the tendency to practice only their fighting part -stripped of practices that contribute to the formation of the trainee’s character- are things we are completely opposed to.

That is why Suibukan addresses to all, because it has something different to offer to everyone. No previous knowledge in martial arts or good physical condition is required and this is why everyone can share in the joy of exercise and effort, regardless of gender or age.
Basically, Suibukan is a community of people who share not only the joy of physical training and effort but also the joy of social contact in the level of families. In a time when many values have been brought down, we believe that Suibukan is an oasis where classical values which support man, family and therefore society are preserved.

There are no good or bad karate styles, only good or bad teachers. A teacher should have a good knowledge of the object, communication ability and ethics. His personal life and behavior as well as his ability in the art of karate are factual criteria according to which the future student evaluates and selects a teacher.
Kyoshi Babis Polychronopoulos is the head instructor of Suibukan in Europe. He is a personal student of the world-known master Tadashi Yamashita, founder of Suikendo and head instructor of Shorin Ryu and Matayoshi Kobudo in the US.
